Fears of electoral chaos

I'm always suspicious of politicians trying to extend their term of office. It is always presented as being so they have time to get to grips with the business of governement, but often seems more like - do things you know the electorate would vote you out for doing!

A proposal to extend the term of office for States Deputies in Jersey from three to four years would lead to electoral chaos.

Deputy Peter Troy's proposal came after the States agreed that Constables should serve four-year terms and all be elected on the same day.

Now the Privileges and Procedures Committee have come out firmly against the Troy proposal saying that unless the office of Senator is also changed, the island would be presented with a series of out-of-step elections with a vote for the whole house only coming around every 12 years.

The Committee say that would make it difficulat to appoint Ministers and committee leaders.

If Deputy Troy's proposal is rejected, the States will be asked to reverse their July decision on the term of office for Constables.
